EVERKEY currently supports two types of Authorization Devices; Rockeys and iButtons. iButtons were introduced in 1994 and Rockey support was released in May, 2002. In December of 2002, iButtons became a specialty order item due to their unpredictable availability.
As indicated in our 30/May/07 email to all iButton Customers, the 2-Keys parts (DHE/DB5/DBI) are being phased out by the manufacturer due to the age of their fabrication facility, cost of replacement parts and diminished demand.
Az-Tech will continue to sell the DS1410E Parallel iButton Holder and the DS1425 and DS1991 iButtons, as long as the parts are available from the manufacturer.
However, it could take up to 90 days or longer to fulfill an order.
This doesn't mean that EVERKEY is dropping iButton support. The Version 6 Upgrade will offer limited support for all of the discontinued parts as well as ADD FULL SUPPORT for the USB Holder and DS1994 iButton.
The Version 6 "limited support" means that Kechk, Keshow and Renew work with all iButtons in USB or Parallel Holders. However, only the first Partition of the iButton is supported and you can only use Kebuild to build protection on a DS1994 iButton in a USB Holder.
Here's the link to the latest details: EVERKEY v6 Upgrade Overview.
iButton in a Parallel Port Holder
iButtons contain the electronic circuitry to store the unique Authorization for your Product. This circuitry is housed inside of a 17mm stainless steel can rugged enough to withstand being dropped, stepped on or even submersed in water. iButtons contain their own lithium power source to keep your Authorization safe and secure for up to 10 years.
iButtons support Expiration-Dates and Execution Limits. These Limits may be remotely reset or removed (if authorized by you) using the provided Renew program.
iButtons are connected to the computer via a Parallel (LPT) port Holder. Holders have no other function and don't contain any Authorization or protection information.
Parallel (LPT) port Holders can be daisy-chained and are completely transparent to other bi-directional devices plugged into the same Parallel port.
