What is RoHS?

RoHS, also known as Lead-Free, stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC restricts the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. All applicable products in the European Union (EU) market after July 1, 2006 must pass RoHS compliance. RoHS impacts the entire electronics industry.

The RoHS Directive is the EU Directive 2002-95/EC, which mandates that electrical and electronic products put in the market place within the European Union shall contain restrictive levels of the following substances:

1. Lead (Pb)
2. Cadmium (Cd)
3. Mercury (Hg)
4. Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+)
5. Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
6. Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)

Those responsible and required to comply with the RoHS Directive are Producers of electrical and electronic products. These include those who:

• Manufacturer and sell their own brand of products
• Re-sell products, produced by others, under their own brand, or
• Import/export products into a member state.

Although there are no standardized forms, producers are responsible for providing material documentation from their suppliers stating how their products comply with the RoHS Directive.

Rockey RoHS Compliance Information

All Az-Tech Rockey products are made by Feitian Technologies Co., Ltd. and are "RoHS Compliant" per the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC.

iButton RoHS Compliance Information

All Az-Tech iButton products are made by Dallas Semiconductor/Maxim Integrated Products and have been tested for compliancy of the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC.

Lead is the only RoHS-banned substance of concern for the integrated circuits manufactured by Dallas Semiconductor/Maxim Integrated Products, therefore lead-free products are also RoHS compliant products. Like other semiconductor companies, Dallas/Maxim uses tin/lead solder (plating) for the surface finish of leadframes. These packages are deemed as "leaded". Many Dallas/Maxim package types are qualified as lead-free and have a surface finish that is comprised of 100% matte tin.

iButton and Holder products that are compliant with the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC are marked with either a "+" or "#" symbol as follows:

• A "+" symbol at the end of the part number means that the device is "Lead-Free Qualified" and "RoHS Compliant".
• A "#" symbol at the end of the part number means that the device is not lead-free, but is "RoHS Compliant" due to an exemption for lead.
